From its establishment by the Rev. William W. Robertson and the local Presbyterians in 1851 as Fulton College, Westminster has traveled a long and often challenging path as it has sought to accomplish the task set by its founders — the education of the “whole man.” The story of Westminster College is one of devotion and sacrifice on the part of faculty, trustees, alumni, staff, and friends. This informal history tells of their dreams and their struggles as they worked to build and sustain a quality institution of higher learning. It also presents both the serious and lighter moments of generations of young men and women who have passed through the historic columns of Westminster Hall, and, in bringing alive the past of their college, highlights what has been achieved by its sons and daughters.

In retelling and updating the Westminster story in the first two editions, in 1971 and 2000, respectively, Professor Parrish vividly and accurately captured the essence of the College, bringing a fresh perspective to its history. In this third edition, he once again delved into the archives of the College and the living memories of its faculty, alumni, and friends. In doing so, he captures the verve and excitement of the last 20 years. All this adds up to a volume that should make enjoyable reading for long-standing supporters of Westminster as well as for those whose acquaintance with this “great small college” begins here.

Professor William E. Parrish joined the history department of Westminster College in 1955, becoming the College Historian in1965. His interest in the College continued after he joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 1978. He retired in 1996. He was awarded a B.S. with honors from Kansas State University and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. His writings include David Rice Atchison of Missouri: Border Politician; Missouri and the Union, 1861-1865; Missouri Under Radical Rule, 1865-1870; Missouri, the Heart of the Nation; and Frank Blair: Lincoln’s Conservative.

Dr. Parrish was inducted into the prestigious Association of Churchill Fellows of America’s National Churchill Museum in 2019.
